Below are helpful tips, which describe how to deal with a particular stain. Please be sure to check your clothing tag to make sure one of the above symbols is not marked with an "X".
 

 
BEER
On Wool
Remove stain by patting on the back with a cloth soaked in methylated spirit, then brush with a damp brush.
On silk
Remove stain using a very diluted mixture of water and methylated spirit.

BIRO INK
On Wool, Silk, Cotton and Hemp
Pat with a cloth soaked in pure alcohol after laying an absorbent cloth under the fabric; be particularly careful with colored fabrics.

BLOOD
On Wool
Pat with mixture of ammonia and hydrogen peroxide.
On Silk
Rinse with plenty of cold water.
On Cotton
Treat with cold water and ammonium.

BUTTER
On Cotton, Wool and Silk
Absorb the grease with tissue paper and scatter with talc, then brush. If the stain persists us trichloroethylene.

CHOCOLATE
On Wool and Silk
Treat with water and ammonia and pat with lukewarm water.
On Cotton and Linen
Remove stain with lukewarm water and borax.

COFFEE
On Wool
Remove stain with carbonated water: if the stain is stubborn, treat with glycerin, with water and ammonium.

COSMETIC
On Wool and Cotton
Pat with ether and brush gently.
On Silk
Brush with a damp brush and wash in lukewarm water and neutral detergent.

FRUITS
On Wool
Remove stain with a cloth soaked in lemon juice or vinegar or hot milk, then rinse with water.
On Silk
Remove stain with lukewarm water to which a few drops of vinegar have been added.
On Cotton, Linen and Hemp
Remove stain with water to which a few drops of ammonia and hydrogen peroxide have been added.

GREASE
On Cotton
Brush the dry fabric before washing it.
On Wool
Cover immediately with talc, brush and remove stain with methylated spirit and ether; iron between two sheets of blotting paper.
On Silk
Cover with soap flakes, brush and remove stain with methylated spirit or trichloroethylene; when the grease has been absorbed, cover with blotting paper and iron with a hot iron.

LIPSTICK
On Wool and Cotton
Remove stain with benzene or ether.
On Silk
Treat with methylated spirit.

LIQUEURS
On Wool, Silk and Cotton
Remove stain with lukewarm water and ammonia or soap.

OIL
On Wool
Sprinkle with talc and brush when dry; then remove stain with trichloroethylene or with a mixture of methylated spirit, ether and ammonia.
On Silk
Cover with talc and brush; then remove stain with trichloroethylene.
On Cotton
Cover with talc brush; then iron until it evaporates or removes stain with evaporates or remove stain with soap and water.

PERFUME
On Cotton and Wool
Rub gently with a pad of cotton wool soaked in water with a few drops of 12-volume hydrogen peroxide, then wash in cold water with a few drops of vinegar.

RUST
On Cotton
Lemon juice and fine salt, rinse.
On Wool
Water and ammonia, rinse.
On Silk
Lemon juice and ammonia, rinse.

SUGARED WATER
On Wool, Cotton, Velvet, etc.
Remove stain with lukewarm and if necessary with ether.
On Silk
Remove stain with lukewarm water alone.

SURFACE BURNS
On Wool and Cotton
Remove stain with a mixture of diluted ammonia and hydrogen peroxide.
On Silk
Treat with cold water to which lemon juice and cooking salt have been added.

SWEAT
On Wool and Silk
Remove stain with hydrogen peroxide and vinegar.
On Cotton
Treat with water and ammonia.

SYRUP AND JAM
On Wool, Silk and Cotton
Treat with lukewarm water or ether (not on silk).

TOMATO
On Wool, Silk and Cotton
Wash with water and sprinkle with talc.

VINEGAR
On Cotton, Wool and Silk
Cold water with a few drops of ammonia, then rinse in cold water.

WAX
On Cotton and Wool
Scrape the wax gently; place two sheets of blotting paper over and under the stain, then iron it. If the wax is colored, rub gently with cotton wool soaked in ether.

WINE
On Wool
Cover the stain with fine salt; then, after removing the salt, brush with diluted hydrogen peroxide.
On Silk
Treat as for wool, but brush with water and vinegar.
On Cotton
Treat as for wool, brush with hot lemon juice.
